Man charged with DUI, vehicular homicide after stepson killed in crash

A 20-year-old Frayser man was killed early this morning in a crash where his stepfather, who police reported was intoxicated, was behind the wheel.

Police responded to the crash at Frayser Boulevard and Range Line road at about 3:15 a.m., where investigators found the car had been traveling eastbound on Frayser at a high rate of speed, left the street and struck a utility pole. The vehicle, a Chevrolet Impala, rolled over after the impact.

Police reported that the driver, Derrence Flynn, 33, told officers that he had "a few beers at the club" when they arrived at the scene.

One of the passengers in the vehicle, Flynn's 20-year-old stepson Terrance Macklin, was taken to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis after the accident. He later died from his injuries.

Another passenger suffered a broken arm in the crash, according to a police affidavit.

Flynn, who officers reported smelled of alcohol and had slurred speech and glassy eyes, was also taken to the MED for treatment.

He was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants or drugs, public intoxication, reckless driving, vehicular assault, vehicular homicide-intoxication and driving with a suspended, revoked or canceled license.

For driving without insurance, he was also charged with violation of financial law.

Bond for Flynn has not been set.
