Mississippi Voters Reject "Personhood" Amendment

FAST FACTS:
  • The "Personhood" amendment would have defined a fertilized egg as a person.
  • Many voters say they believe life begins at conception.
  • But many were also confused about the amendment's far-reaching effects.

(Hernando, MS 11/8/11) Voters in Mississippi shot down the "personhood" amendment, initiative 26 on Tuesday, rejecting a definition of life beginning at conception.

The initiative failed statewide and in DeSoto County, where 54 percent voted no and 45 percent yes.

The amendment would have defined a fertilized egg as a person, which could have affected a woman's right to an abortion, in vitro fertilization, the morning after pill, as well as access to certain contraceptives.

Some voters in Hernando told News Channel 3 they were very confused about these effects, since the language on the ballot is minimal.

"Every one that we've talked to today that's gone to vote, is totally confused about it," said Gonda Riggs.

Riggs personally believes life begins at conception, so she voted yes.

But she wondered if rape victims would still be able to seek an abortion in an emergency.

"In my heart, I hope that I got this right, the way that I read it and understood it. I voted yes," she said.
