Memphis police charged a woman with seven counts of aggravated cruelty to animals on Tuesday after discovering six dead cats and one dead dog at a deserted house in East Memphis.
Deborah L. Yons, 51, was held in Shelby County?s Jail East on $5,000 bond following her arrest on the felony charges.
About 10 a.m. on Tuesday police and animal control officers investigating a complaint of a foul odor coming from the house at 3855 S. Goodman Circle, near Getwell and Rhodes Avenue found the dead animals, according to a court affidavit explaining the charges against Yons.
Yon identified herself as the owner of the home and told police that she had left it in 2007 but allowed the animals to remain there. She told officers that she could no longer care for them and left them in the house to starve and die, according to the court document.
An officer and a veterinarian found one surviving pet walking through the backyard, a small black cat that Yons said is named Ying Ying.
