- A two-alarm fire broke out at the Alcy Garden Apartments.
- It destroyed 10 apartment units.
- The fire department says one fire hydrant failed to produce water.
(Memphis 10/0720/11) The Memphis Fire Department was called to a large fire at the Alcy Garden apartments in South Memphis just before 12:30 Friday afternoon.
?We began our firefighting and rescue operations,? said Lt. Wayne Cooke, spokesperson for the Memphis Fire Department. ?This fire was brought under control about 1:10p. At this point there are no injuries to our firefighters or civilians,? he added.
Witnesses say they were alarmed to see a hydrant not producing any water. We noticed firefighters had to run a hose hundreds of yards down Alcy road to burning apartments.
Lt. Wayne Cook looked into why the hydrant was dry. Witnesses say they believe the fire took longer to knock down because the firefighters had a limited water supply. The fire destroyed two buildings, a total of 10 apartment units.
?We have not attempted to begin our investigation at this point but we do have fire investigators on the scene,? said Lt. Cooke.
As for the dried-up hydrant, Lt. Cooke says it did not hinder or delay their ability to fight the fire. He said they already had two hoses hooked up. He says the fire took a long time to contain because it was just that big.
The Memphis Fire Department maintains nearly 28,000 fire hydrants in the city of Memphis. They're checked once per year.
They have flagged the faulty hydrant.
No word on when it will be fixed.
