(Memphis, TN 9/16/11) Several different types of birth control were put on voluntary recall by pharmaceutical company Qualitest, after learning they were packaged incorrectly. The error leads to incorrect dosage, and therefore possibility of unplanned pregnancies.

Dr. Charles Champion of Champion?s Pharmacy in Whitehaven, said, ?I think this is major, because there?s a lot at stake.?

Dr. Champion said the pills are rotated in the package according to different strengths and different combinations of hormones.

?Therefore, if you?ve taken the wrong strength of the pill during the course of the menstrual cycle, then there?s a possibility, yes, of becoming pregnant.?

A Qualitest spokesman told CNN the recall includes 1.4 million packages that were distributed to pharmacists and customers since last year.

The pills recalled are all generic forms of brand medication: Cyclafem, Emoquette, Gildess, Orsythia, Previfem, and Tri-Previfem.

In total, 75 lot numbers were affected.

If your pills are recalled, check with your pharmacist to get a refill from a different lot number. In the meantime, it is best to use other methods of contraception.

Women in Memphis were surprised, and concerned at the news.

?That?s kind of scary. Especially for those who are younger, that could be a big issue,? said Shajauna Jones of Whitehaven.

Jones said she was worried for the teenagers, who already have a reputation of a high pregnancy rate.

Teens who take birth control may not pay attention to such a recall.

Christi Huffstutler is visiting Memphis from Missouri, where she?s a high school counselor.

?They?re sexually active, they have birth control pills, and a lot of them I don?t think would be responsible enough to pay much attention. I mean, hopefully there will be parents or some adult that might guide them and draw their attention to the recall. But unless that happens, these girls may be victim to a bad deal,? she said.

Those caught off guard by the news, like Marcela Pinilla, said it?s terrifying for women who are trying to carefully plan when to start a family.

?These women clearly want to plan when to have their kids, and how to have them. And it?s disrespectful to them. It?s not like it?s something you can fix. It?s a human life,? she said.
