People: McCartney announces wedding at London hall

Paul McCartney is set to tie the knot at the venue where he first married more than 40 years ago.

Officials said Friday that the former Beatle and fiance Nancy Shevell have posted a notice of intention to marry at London's Marylebone Town Hall.

Westminster Council, which oversees the venue, said the notice was posted Wednesday, meaning the couple could marry anytime after Sept. 30. They have a year to hold the ceremony.

McCartney, 69, married his first wife Linda at the town hall in 1969. She died of cancer in 1998, and he later married Heather Mills. They divorced in 2008.

It is the second marriage for 51-year-old Shevell. She was married for more than 20 years to attorney Bruce Blakeman and serves on the board of New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

D.C. honors statehood advocate

Actress Hayden Panettiere was to be honored by District of Columbia officials for her commitment to making the district a state.

Panettiere played a cheerleader with superpowers on the NBC drama "Heroes" among several other roles.

On a trip to Washington several years ago, she learned that residents of the nation's capital have no voting representation in Congress and began speaking out about the statehood fight.

She has appeared at numerous pro-statehood events and in public service announcements.

Mayor Vincent Gray was scheduled to proclaim Friday as "Hayden Panettiere Day" in the district.

Donors match bid for Crow car

A charity says a couple who bought the vintage Mercedes singer Sheryl Crow donated to benefit the schools in tornado-ravaged Joplin, Mo., has also donated $130,000 to the district's recovery fund.

Missouri's Community Foundation for the Ozarks reported Thursday that the couple who bought the car for $143,000 -- a $130,000 donation after auction fees -- matched the sum. The donors wanted to remain anonymous.

Crow, a native of Kennett, Mo., about 80 miles north of Memphis said in a statement that she was touched by their generosity.

Flynt prosecutor retires as sheriff

A sheriff and ex-prosecutor who took on Larry Flynt in a case depicted in a movie about the Hustler magazine publisher will retire after a 40-year career as an elected official in Cincinnati.

Simon Leis was the county prosecutor who obtained a 1977 obscenity conviction against Flynt that was overturned on appeal. In the made-in-Memphis 1996 movie "The People Vs. Larry Flynt," Republican Leis was portrayed by Democratic political strategist and commentator James Carville.
